Central European University (CEU) Democracy Institute in Budapest Research Fellowship Program 2022

Deadline: July 23, 2022

Central European University (CEU) Democracy Institute in Budapest Research Fellowship Program 2022

Applications are now open for the Central European University (CEU) Democracy Institute in Budapest Research Fellowship Program 2022. The Jewish Studies Program at Central European University (Vienna/Budapest) is offering short- and long-term research fellowships (3-10 months) for projects related to Jewish history, culture, and society in Communist and post-Communist Central and Eastern Europe.

The specific disciplinary and thematic focus is open, but preference will be given to candidates whose projects involve the analysis of the rich sources on the Jewish experience in Central and Eastern Europe that are stored in the Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archive in Budapest.

These sources include the large collection of family and life history interviews with members of the “second generation” in Hungary; the database on Jewish architectural heritage of Budapest; the datasets from two large-scale demographic surveys on Jews in Hungary (conducted in 1999 and 2016), as well as the files of the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) Research Institute and the Open Media Research Institute (OMRI).

The Jewish Studies Program will offer academic support and peer mentorship. The primary duty of the research fellows is to pursue their own research for publication and submit a report on the results at the end of the grant period.

The fellows will be hosted by the CEU Democracy Institute in Budapest, and they are required to be in continuous residence for the duration of the fellowship. The research period must fall between September 1, 2022, and August 31, 2023.

The application should include

  • an academic CV,
  • a writing sample or one representative publication,
  • a research proposal of not more than 1,500 words,
  • and the contact information of two referees.

The cover letter should describe what the candidate hopes to accomplish during the tenure of the fellowship and indicate the dates (3-10 months) they would like to be in residence.
