African Genomic Medicine Training Initiative (AGMT) 2023

Deadline: 22 February 2023 at 23:59 CAT.

African Genomic Medicine Training Initiative (AGMT) 2023

African Genomic Medicine Training Initiative provides genomics and genetics education to Nurses, Medical Doctors, Pathologists/Medical Laboratory Scientists and Technicians based in Africa.

Over a period of 3 months of intensive biweekly contact sessions, the course will emphasize the practical application of content into participants’ current settings and roles. The problem-based practical sessions will emphasize increased knowledge in the genetics of African health issues. During contact sessions, classrooms meet in their local classrooms to watch the recorded lecture videos and then later meet with the trainer/s (virtually) to discuss/ask questions about the session’s content.

African Genomic Medicine Training Initiative (AGMT) is planning to deliver a Genomic Medicine course for Health Professionals (Nurses, Medical Doctors, Pathologists/Medical Laboratory Scientists & Technicians). The main objectives are to:
  • Provide genomics and genetics education to Nurses, Medical Doctors, Pathologists and Medical Laboratory Scientists based in Africa.
  • Develop relevant competencies in Genomic Medicine.
  • Emphasize the practical application of genomic medicine content into diverse settings and roles using problem-based learning.
  • Emphasize the practical application of content into participants’ current settings and roles.

A virtual blended distance learning model is used for this course. Trainers pre-record their lectures, which are downloaded and watched by the local classrooms during contact sessions with the support of local facilitators. This will be followed by a contact session with the trainer via Zoom conference platform, during which questions may be asked to the trainer. Thereafter, participants will complete a quiz on Vula, our course management platform. Classrooms will be set up at different sites across Africa.

Intended Audience:

This course is aimed at individuals with a Nursing/Medicine/Pathology/Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology background that have no prior genomic medicine experience. Priority will be given to qualified Nurses, Medical Doctors, Pathologists/Medical Laboratory Scientists and Technicians.

Participants who are training to become Nurses, Medical Doctors, Pathologists/Medical Laboratory Scientists and Technicians should note that their application will only be considered if space allows since preference will be given to qualified/practicing health professionals. They should also ensure that they will have time in between their own studies to participate in the AGMT course.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, Nurses should be able to:

  • Develop and implement a plan of care for patients that incorporates genetic and genomics information and is sensitive to individual and cultural preferences and norms.
  • Offer basic genetic counseling to patients and families
  • Conduct genomics research that is ethical and appropriate to their context

By the end of the course, Medical Doctors should be able to:

  • Develop and implement a plan of care for patients that incorporates genetic and genomics information and is sensitive to individual and cultural preferences and norms.
  • Offer basic genetic counseling to patients and families
  • Conduct genomics research that is ethical and appropriate to their context
  • Recognize that genomic tests require interpretation with respect to the patient’s clinical status (e.g., pathogenic, likely pathogenic, and benign)
  • Explain the concepts of analytic validity, clinical validity, and clinical utility as they relate to genomic testing

By the end of the course, Pathologists/Medical Laboratory Scientists and Technicians should be able to:

  • Develop and implement a plan of care for patients that incorporates genetic and genomics information and is sensitive to individual and cultural preferences and norms.
  • Conduct genomics research that is ethical and appropriate to their context
  • Conduct genomic testing and interpretation
  • Ensure genomic tests have undergone adequate analytic and clinical validation and appropriate quality control and proficiency testing are in place
  • Analyse the strengths and weaknesses of using omics
